I mentioned that I wrote this story a couple weeks ago for a contest called The Watery Graves Invitational. The winners were to be announced today. Imagine my surprise when I woke up this morning, picked up my phone to check the weather, and found a bunch of congratulatory messages waiting for me.
Turns out I won the friggin’ thing. I know, crazy, isn’t it?
Honestly, it’s hard to process. I was happy with the story, but I also knew that all of the other writers are excellent, and my highest hope was to place in the top five. So it’s kind of a shock. But really thrilling as well. Honestly, it’s distracted me from all the other stuff that I intended to do today, and I don’t mind that at all.
Anyway, if you want to read it, you can check it out right here. Leave a comment there if you like it.
And no, it isn’t entirely made up. The crux of the story (the requirement for the contest was every story had to reference a horse) involves this year’s Kentucky Derby. Read the story, then watch this. I bet I watched it 10 times over the course of thinking about, and finally writing, the story.
Thanks to all the judges who put in the time to give us writers the opportunity. Congrats to the other winners as well. I can’t wait to read the other stories!
