One More to the Gut from 2014

I’ve been quiet around here lately; I’ve mainly just been focusing instead on getting through all the holidays amid all the changes that have occurred the back half of this year. Today 2014 is getting in one last nasty shot at us, as we are saying farewell to our big old loyal dog, Bernard. At 14 or 15, he’s had a hell of a good run, way longer than most big dogs, but it still sucks. Frankly, a couple months ago I would have been surprised to see him even make it to Christmas. But last night, whatever he had in him that was enabling him to move around, albeit shakily, gave out, and his time has come. I’ll miss him.

A year-and-a-half ago we were a four-dog house. We are down to one, with the two cats still hanging in there as well. It’s been a bumpy road.

2015 will be better.

  1. I’m sorry to hear about your dogs. Such members of the family. My ex’s mini dachsund is 17 now and still OK, though not in the best of health. It will be weird for me too when she passes. I remember her so fondly

  2. What a beautiful dog. Both my husband and I have each lost 16 year old dogs. With Chelsea at 14 or so now we’re not far from losing another. It always hurts. It should. Good luck.

  3. Thanks, everyone. Our pets are all old, and we knew that once they started to wear out it would make for a rough stretch. That doesn’t make it any easier, but it’s nice to have some commiseration among friends.

  4. Sorry about your dog–pets are such a part of us. My dog is now 14 and I know won’t be around long and he has slowed way down and I think of t his often when I take him on his walks that seem to be getting shorter all the time. May 2015 be good to you
