I’ve been doing my morning jogs on the path that does a kind of figure-eight around various baseball and soccer fields behind the YMCA. Just to the north of it behind a couple fences is the backside of the fairgrounds, where all the decrepit old horse barns are for horseracing, rodeo, etc. The gate was open, so I snuck back there and took a few pictures with my phone.
Horseracing has been a big part of the fair in years past, but insurance concerns means it doesn’t happen anymore (not this year, anyway). When I was a mere lad, when I was still too young even for 4H, I had a friend I hung out with one year at the fair whose family was involved in Quarter Horse racing. After every race we’d run down to the winner’s circle and try and get in the photograph. We didn’t pull it off for every race, but did for a bunch of them. I’m sure there are plenty of folks after the fact that said, “Who the hell are these two dirty punks?!”
