I consider myself a writer first. Photography is something I started doing just as a hobby, mainly to pass the time when I was on the road. Every now and then I got lucky with an image, and that made me a little more interested in learning why that particular image worked. Then a photographer friend told me that I should raise my game some, because as a writer pitching stories it would make me a “dual threat” if I could pitch stories and images simultaneously. So that was the impetus to make me decide to make a concerted effort to become proficient with my camera.

As I started learning the art form, and getting to know and appreciate specific photographers, it really dawned on me that photography is just another form of storytelling. Maybe that is obvious to most people, but the realization to me was particularly significant. Ultimately that is the direction I intend to take my work with the camera.
