Photo Finish Friday

Tennis anyone?

This might be cheating. Think I had it up on my Tumblr page (been posting a lot of one-off stuff there lately) earlier this week, which put it on Facebook and Twitter too. Hard to keep all that social media stuff straight. I like the image enough that I am re-using it here as well. It was taken on my midday walk a few days ago on a foggy, frosty day. These tennis courts are maybe a mile, mile-and-a-half from my house. Loved the frost, thought it made a cool image. Took it with the iPhone, which I was simultaneously using at the time to listen to music and monitor my work stuff (even though I was technically signed out for lunch). Pretty amazing devices, these smartphones. I’ve got some good shots on my “real” camera too, I’ve just been lazy about pulling them off. Need to raise the game there, have a lot to learn still.

Taking pictures is one of my favorite things to do anymore.

Chicago via iPhone

I made the big switch from a Droid phone to an iPhone. I did this mainly because I have some other Apple stuff I wanted to synch, plus it seems there are more resources available for getting maximum use out of it as a decent travel camera. My recent work trip to South Bend, IN, via Chicago, was my first opportunity to test this thing out. I have to say I’m very happy with the results; the pictures I got out of the camera crush the best ones I ever got from my previous phone camera, and I’m only getting started. What follows is a little photo essay of a few shots from the trip. Most come from a jaunt along the “Miracle Mile” when I had a few hours before I had a flight to catch. As always, click an image to see it in all its glory.

I really like this previous one. I mentioned to Julia that I wish that light pole wasn’t there. She asked if, if I had the skills, I would photoshop it out if were a pro submitting it somewhere as a sale or something. I think that’s an interesting question. Does that make it less “legitimate” or not? I lean toward thinking it does. It’s like auto-tune making passable singers out of people who can’t carry a tune in a dump truck. Lies, all lies! It’s a tough choice, certainly.

These photos are all slightly edited. Some via instagram and some from iPhoto. Haven’t touched any of them in Lightroom yet. All in all, as an experiment I’m excited for the stuff I’ll get in the future. I shot quite a few pictures with my regular camera too, which I haven’t pulled off yet. I know those images will be better, and I love the zoom capabilities of it and the ability to shoot in RAW, etc. But for filling the role of always having a camera on hand, I think this iPhone is going to be just perfect. I’m happy.
